As the weather warms up and summer gets closer, it can be tough for kids with ADHD to stay focused on schoolwork. The end of the year brings excitement — and distractions — but it’s also an important time to finish strong.
Here are three simple tips to help kids stay on track and finish the school year with confidence:
1. Keep a Routine (Even When Things Get Busy)
Spring often brings field trips, sports, and special events. While it’s fun, the change in schedule can throw kids off. Try to keep bedtime, wake-up time, and homework time as consistent as possible.
A steady routine helps the brain know what to expect — and that means fewer struggles when it’s time to focus.
2. Use Visual Reminders and Checklists
When the calendar gets crowded, visual reminders can be a lifesaver. A simple checklist for homework, projects, or even daily tasks can give kids a sense of control and accomplishment.
Let them check things off as they go — it’s a great way to build executive function skills like organization and task completion.
3. Celebrate Small Wins
Finishing a worksheet? Great job! Remembering to bring home all their books? Fantastic! Celebrate those small victories. Positive reinforcement helps kids stay motivated, especially when focus feels hard.
You don’t have to throw a party — sometimes a high five or a “Wow, I noticed how hard you worked!” is all it takes.
With a little structure, encouragement, and support, kids with ADHD can finish the school year strong — and feel good about their success.
